Wireless Networking At Rounds Hardware

Bill Round at Round's Hardware in Stoneham was getting complaints from his employees that their handheld inventory scanners were having trouble communicating to the main server over wifi from some of the back corners of the store and warehouse.  He had contacted the vendor who provided the wifi hardware in the store, and runs the inventory management software he uses.  He was quoted a rather high price to replace the older hardware used in the store.

After that, he turned to The Shameless Wolf for help.  Since the handheld scanners in use are an older, Windows CE based system, there really was no advantage to investing the money in newer Wifi Technology at this time.  The equipment just wouldn't be able to take advantage of it.  My analysis of the environment around the store showed there were a lot more wireless networks from neighboring businesses that were interfering with what Bill had setup.

So instead of replacing the older, but still perfectly good wifi equipment, I just replaced the antennas.  I installed Newer, and higher gain antennas to a new location in the center of the store.  This boosted performance well beyond what was needed to reach all areas inside the store and warehouse.  This was done at a great savings compared to buying new hardware, and is also better for the environment, as we are keeping systems in service rather than dealing with recycling or disposal.
